Key work during fellowship

Issue:

  • Poor marketing linkages forced villagers in Kishtwar to sell the walnuts produce at an average price which was up to 25% lower than the average price for same quality walnuts from Kashmir. Additionally value addition from nuts to kernels, which is known to increase the earnings by 32% per Kg of walnuts, was totally absent.

What was done:

  • Institutional mechanism was introduced by organizing farmers with the help of block officials and PRIs. Awareness camps in villages were carried out and farmers were convinced to hold off their produce for one extra month. Market tie up with whole sellers, in other parts of country such as Pune and Gwalior, was done by eliminating two to three layers of middle men. Value addition stages in form of walnut cracking and vacuum packing were introduced on trial basis.

Impact:

  • The average selling price per Kg of walnuts against last year increased by 28% and for the first time 5 quintals of vacuum packed walnut kernels were delivered from Kishtwar.
