Prior work experience:
- Ashwin Prasad worked on livelihood issues before he became a PMRDF. He was employed with IL&FS Cluster Development Initiative Ltd. where he was the Jharkhand state coordinator for the placement linked skill development initiatives of the company. He has also been involved in social mobilization, coordination, and in forging strategic partnerships with government agencies, industries and social organizations. He has participated in skill gap assessment studies for the Ministry of Science and Technology and Government of Jharkhand.
One key work during fellowship
- Lack of sustainable livelihood options for the artisans traditionally involved in rolling of incense sticks. They are mostly involved in the lowest ladder of the value chain and thus get an insignificant share in the profit.
What was done:
- The value chain was studied and the following interventions were designed:
Women organized into groups and clusters
Training and Entrepreneurship development
Technological up-gradation through mechanized rolling machine
Establishing forward and backward market linkage
- Rs.2 Cr. raised from SFURTI and Rs.25 lacs from DIF
800 families mostly from the Scheduled Caste and Minorities to benefit from the project over a period of three years
Attempts a four time increase in the income levels
