Key work during fellowship

  • Agriculture & weaving are two main livelihood sources in this part of Assam. Both are found low in production & in returns claimed from the market. The challenge is to enhance productivity and increase the share in consumer price claimed for both occupations by mobilizing and building their capacity to collective action.

What was done:

  • Various institutions viz. AAU (Assam Agricultural University), NABARD, KVK & local implementing agency have been brought together to mobilize farmers (~2000) & weavers (~500) into groups and intervene to better livelihood practices. These are being co-ordinated & implemented on a timeline. We aspire to organize & sustain them in a farmers producer organization & a handloom cluster gradually.

  • We have been able to mobilize farmers & weavers group, have witnessed agricultural productivity growth in one cycle & established a yarn procurement point. The project is as of now in build up stage, with more data being visible in future we will be in position to quantify the same.
